Developed by a world leading MHD research group - Institute of Physics, University of Latvia
First described in detail and realized for investigation and practical pumping of mercury by Dr. I. Bucenieks, permanent magnet pumps were known since 90s. Proposed construction still widely used for low-melting temperatures such as Sodium, Lithium, Tin and even Lead. PM pumps are attractive with their efficiency, simplicity and cost-efficiency.
The challenge was to find permanent magnet system, that would produce sufficient field also at relatively large distances, unlocking those benefits also to such industries as aluminium metallurgy
In 2009 the group from University of Latvia, Laboratory of MHD Technologies, came up with permanent magnet configuration that is theoretically the best for creating maximum magnetic field at larger distances.
The research was continued with extensive analytical, numerical and experimental investigation. This not only proved the technology, but also gave theoretical background, that enables quickly and precisely assess the applicability and achievable parameters of any new system and task potential for liquid metal movement with permanent magnets.
Most of that power is lost in useless heating up and cooling down of the coils.
We have developed unique permanent magnet bases stirrer that is 10-20x more efficient. For example our side-mounted permanent magnet system on 16t aluminium furnace with 370mm wall used only max 4.5kW to achieve same melt performance as 80kVA coil based system.
